1. Development history of TC4

TC4 is a titanium alloy developed in the United States in the 1950s, its nominal composition is Ti-6al-4v , that is, the main composition is titanium (Ti), aluminum (Al) and vanadium (V), of which the content of titanium is about 90%, the content of aluminum is 6%, the content of vanadium is 4%. TC4 was also the first high temperature titanium alloy in the world at that time. Later, although TC4 could no longer be considered as a high temperature titanium alloy with the successful development of higher temperature titanium alloys, the successful development of TC4 laid a solid foundation for the research of high temperature titanium alloys in the United States.
China began to study titanium alloys in the 1950s, and the study of TC4 titanium alloys was also launched during this period.
2. TC4 performance and application

The main characteristics of TC4 titanium alloy are excellent comprehensive properties, good process characteristics and excellent superplasticity. It is suitable for forming with various pressure processing methods and welding in various ways. The main semi-finished forms of TC4 titanium alloy are bars, forgings, sheets, thick plates, profiles and wire materials. The alloy is mainly used in the annealed state, but can also be strengthened by solution aging.
TC4 titanium alloys are widely used. In aerospace, it is mainly used in the manufacture of various beams, spacers, rails, landing gear beams in aircraft structures, fans and compressor discs and blades of aircraft engines, shells of space rockets, pressure vessels and various types of fasteners. The alloy is also essential for civilian applications. For example, gas turbine blades in the electric power industry, ship thrusters in the shipbuilding industry, oil drilling platforms in Marine engineering, various corrosion resistant pumps in the chemical industry, artificial implants in medicine, various sports equipment and so on.
3. Improvement and future of TC4

In recent years, the application of TC4 titanium alloy in the aerospace field has been further expanded, especially in the development and application of new damage tolerance titanium alloy materials have made remarkable progress. Typical improvements are TC4 ELI and TC4-DT.
TC4 ELI low-gap titanium alloy is an improved version of TC4 titanium alloy, which is a very famous low-temperature titanium alloy. In the Apollo program, as the main low-temperature structural material, it is widely used in liquid hydrogen storage tanks and low-temperature catheters, showing better performance.
Tc4-dt alloy is developed on the basis of TC4 ELI titanium alloy. The alloy has the characteristics of moderate strength, high damage tolerance and long fatigue life. Compared with other medium strength titanium alloys, TC4-DT has quite high fracture toughness and anti-fatigue crack propagation ability under the condition of similar strength and plasticity level, and has become a key structural material for new aircraft in China.
Since the appearance of TC4 alloy, people have been studying it continuously. In recent years, due to the change of design concept, the research on it has set off a climax. At present, the influence of microstructure, texture, heat treatment, cross section size, loading direction, stress ratio, surface state and corrosion environment on fatigue properties of the alloy has been studied extensively, which makes it become a new applied material again.
