Roughness Ra and Rz

Roughness Ra and Rz are parameters that describe surface roughness. They are methods used to describe the longitudinal curvature and average height difference of the machined surface.
Roughness Ra is defined by ISO 4287 and is one of the most widely used parameters in surface roughness. It is calculated by the average value of the surface height deviation within a specific length. On the surface with lower Ra, the surface is smoother.
On the contrary, Rz is one of the surface roughness indicators, which is calculated by the average height deviation between the highest and lowest points of the surface within the same length as Ra. On the surface with lower Rz, the surface is smoother. Rz value is usually larger than Ra.
