What's Nickel Plating?
Nickel plating is a surface treatment technology that forms a nickel layer on the surface of the substrate by electrochemical or chemical means to improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance, aesthetics and conductivity of the metal material. Nickel plating is usually carried out by electroplating or chemical plating.
Electroplating nickel adopts an electrolytic process, that is, under the action of direct current, the nickel ions in the electrolyte containing nickel ions are continuously reduced and selectively deposited on the surface of the substrate to form a uniform, dense, thick and hard nickel layer. At this time, the electroplating coating has a certain effect on the surface hardening, corrosion resistance and aesthetic improvement of the metal substrate.
The method of chemical nickel plating uses some chemical substances to reduce the nickel ions that have adsorption effects on the metal substrate with other ions, so that the nickel ions form a chemical plating layer on the surface of the metal substrate. Compared with electroplating nickel, chemical nickel plating has the characteristics of high brightness, high finish, uniform thickness and no corrosion, but its coating film thickness is relatively low.
The advantages of nickel plating
1. Corrosion resistance: Nickel plating can effectively prevent metal corrosion and improve the hardness and wear resistance of the metal surface.
2. Aesthetics: The nickel-plated surface has high gloss and good appearance texture, making the metal parts more beautiful.
3. Conductivity: Nickel plating has good conductivity and is suitable for electronic devices and components that require high conductivity.
The disadvantages of nickel plating
1. Hard to control: The quality of the nickel-plated film is affected by many factors, such as temperature, current density, etc., which need to be strictly controlled during the manufacturing process, otherwise adverse reactions will occur and the quality of the coating will decrease.
2. Will produce hydrogen embrittlement: A large amount of hydrogen will be produced during the nickel plating process. If it is not removed in time, it will cause hydrogen embrittlement on the surface of the metal parts, affecting the metal properties.
3. The coating is easy to invalid: In certain environments, such as high temperature, acid and alkali environment, the coating is easily corroded and damaged, resulting in coating failure.
