Is there a standard for machining tolerances at the international level?
Yes, there are several international standards for machining tolerances. The Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) contains seven different standards for measuring standard machining tolerances. In addition, there is the ISO 2768 standard.
What is ISO 2768?
ISO 2768 is an international standard that specifies general tolerances for parts certified with international standards. It contains different classes, including:
-GENERAL TOLERANCES FOR LINEAR AND ANGULAR DIMENSIONS
(1) Linear dimensions
(2) External radius and chamfer heights
(3)Angular dimensions
-GENERAL TOLERANCES FOR FORM AND POSITION
(1) Straightness and flatness
(2) Perpendicularity
(3)Symmetry
(4) Run-out

Furthermore, ISO 2768 defines five tolerance classes: V, M, K, L, and H, each corresponding to a different tolerance range. For example, Grade V tolerances are suitable for small batch machining and products requiring high precision, while grade L tolerances are suitable for high-volume production and products requiring ordinary precision. ISO 2768 has become a common standard in the global machining and manufacturing industry, providing good guidance in the quality control and tolerance management of products.
