ASTM B633 is a coating specification standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
This standard specifies the requirements for electroplating coatings such as zinc plating, nickel plating, chrome plating, and phosphating treatment on metal substrates (such as steel, copper, aluminum, etc.). The types of coatings covered by ASTM B633 include electroplated zinc (Fe/Zn), electroplated zinc-iron alloy (Fe/Zn), and electroplated nickel (Ni). This standard establishes test methods for detecting and identifying coating quality, such as thickness testing, corrosion resistance testing, and appearance inspection. In addition, ASTM B633 also specifies the grades and classifications of coatings to adapt to various use environments and application requirements. ASTM B633 is often used to develop coating quality standards to ensure that the coated metal parts have good corrosion resistance, rust resistance, aesthetic properties, and long service life.
ASTM B633 Classifications
ASTM B633 includes four classifications. Each classification specifies both Type and Service Condition:
Type (Type I,II,III,IV,V, or VI) – to determine which supplemental treatment or chromate to apply.
Service Condition (SC1, SC2, SC3 or SC4) – to define the minimum plating thickness required according to the type of environment.
Service Condition 1 is for mild or indoor applications whereas service condition 4 is for very severe or highly corrosive applications.
